Brannon turned 28 today. Last night we were out very late due to an unfortunate set of circumstances and when we got home way after midnight we crept into the kitchen and snuck a piece of birthday cake. Both boys were asleep. We sat on the floor of the kitchen eating cake, drinking milk and just talking. Not about bills, not about appointments or the boys - we talked about pointless things and laughed together. Hiding there between the cabinets, it almost felt like a date. And then Austin woke up and reality snapped us back. But for a few minutes it was a nice little break and reminded me of one of the roles I sometimes forget Brannon fills, he is my best friend.
Happy Birthday my love.
Since Ben has been able to talk he has called birthdays 'Happy Days'. He has been anticipating Daddy's happy day for months.
Today Ben made a list of Happy Day necessities.
- Cake
- Balloons
- Green plates
- Happy Hats
We set off for Party City. Upon arrival to the store Austin was fussing, I had a headache and was not in the mood to try and coordinate something fabulous. So Ben got the basket and was told to get whatever he wanted.

This is what happens when you give a 3 year old free creative control over a birthday.
Enough balloons to rival 'Up'
Party beads, Elmo hats with 'Yippee' across the top and of course the biggest hat he could find in the store for the birthday boy.
Brannon loved it. Because at heart - he and our little boy share a need to be silly.

And while he may have been born in 1983 - part of him gets to be 3 with Ben.
We had a great afternoon. We laughed and ate cake. Blew out the candles twice so 'everyone' got a turn.

It wasn't the most coordinated or well planned celebration - but it was fun and you could tell watching Ben unveil each 'surprise' to Brannon he was so proud of himself and it was magical. And isn't that what birthdays should be?

To many more magical memories. I raise my beach ball sippy cup with swirly straw. Cheers.
